What is a gap year?
During the 00's, gap years grew in popularity as educators encouraged students to explore themselves before attending college. Whereas in previous decades when gap years were a subtle way of saying "you're not a good enough student", schools worked with top performers to design unique experiences such as studying in another country, teaching English as a second language, or learning a specific skill.
We live in a different world. The gap year is no longer an opportunity to expand horizons, but an alternative to a lifetime of debt, a changing job market, and a sharp decline in academic resources despite growing university endowments. While the University can be an amazing place to grow and learn, families need to carefully consider all options before making what has become a complete and overwhelming financial decision.
What will an Ideatrek gap year achieve?
There are many options for students considering gap years. In fact, an entire industry has developed to service the need. In some cases, students are using the gap year to bolster their application and attend top schools. In other cases, students learn a trade and must decide whether to even attend college. Our gap year is not intended to get you into a better school or funnel you into the workforce.
Our goal is to expose you to a variety of skills and experiences so you can make that decision on your own.
What will I do during my gap year?
You will be working with professionals from various sectors of the economy including design, software engineering, business development, the law, and more. The year is broken down to milestones which you will achieve at your own pace with the opportunity to move up and learn new skills or specialize in something you've learned along the way.
How much does this cost?
The program is free. Ideatrek does not accept any fees from gap year participants. In some cases, students will want to specialize in a particular field such as data science or start their own business.
In some cases, our 3rd party partners do charge for access to their platforms, but these fees are nominal. For example, if someone wanted to start a business, they would need to incorporate a company. Fees to incorporate are paid to the state in which they file and can range from $200-$1,000. OR a student may wish to specialize in machine learning, in which case we would need to rent GPUs from a platform provider like AWS. Depending on how much data they are processing, fees can range from $50-$5,000/month, but our staff will make sure students do not overspend. No matter how the student wishes to specialize, our team will guide them to the best option for their project.
